A large crowd gathered in the Events Barn on Nov. 9 for Multicultural Mayhem, a celebration of diversity through performances, fashion, and food. The event was organized by On the Move, a student organization that builds relationships between Utica’s refugee community and Hamilton College.

Samuel Bowlby ‘04 returned to Hamilton on Nov. 11 to present the sixth annual General Josiah Bunting III Veterans Day lecture. Bowlby is a veteran who served as an infantry officer in the United States Marine Corps.

Six Hamilton students went to Clinton Middle School to help facilitate a Hanging with Hamilton open gym on Nov. 2. At the event, the Hamiton students played volleyball, basketball, and Castle on the Fence with about 20 middle school students.

Hamilton’s senior art concentrators embarked on the annual Art Department trip to New York City to see and learn from contemporary studio artists and their work from Nov. 1 - 3. The seniors visited the studios of painter Loren Munk, photographer Eileen Quinlan, photographer and sculptor Ellie Krakow, painter Peter Krashes, and photographer Laurel Nakadate from Thursday to Saturday.

The 24th Philosophy Born of Struggle Conference, titled Answering the Call: Philosophies Born of Struggle in the 21st Century, opened with an address presented by Charles Mills, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the City University of New York, on Friday, Nov. 2.

Princeton University Professor and 2017 MacArthur “Genius” Award winner Dr. Betsy Levy Paluck presented innovative research on the effects of social norms and community behavior in a lecture at Hamilton on Nov. 5. Paluck’s presentation, Reducing Prejudice and Bullying in Our World Today: The Role of Social Norms, was this year’s James S. Plant Distinguished Scientist Lecture. Paluck dedicated her presentation to Devah Pager, a dear friend and fellow social psychologist whose research on race, crime and mass incarceration broke new ground in understanding racial discrimination in America.
