Making a Wish Upon a Star

On May 16, a group of students, faculty, and community members gathered at Hamilton College’s Peters Observatory to witness something more than a sky tour. Through the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central New York, the Hamilton men’s hockey team and Assistant Professor of Physics Adam Lark helped surprise a local teenager, Matthew, with a professional-grade telescope — his long-awaited wish.

Congratulations 2024-25 Class & Charter Day Student Awardees

At Hamilton’s annual Class & Charter Day convocation on May 13, 142 students were honored with academic prizes and scholarships, and faculty teaching award recipients were recognized. Delbert “Del” Gonzales ’25 was awarded the James Soper Merrill Prize, and Mohammad “Isa” Khan ’26 received the Fillius Drown Prize Scholarship. Associate Professor of Philosophy Justin Clark served as the keynote speaker.

  • Recent graduate Deanna Durben ’25 engaged in research across the domains of sociology and psychology during her time at Hamilton. As the recipient of the B.F. Skinner Prize, the Jonathan Marder Prize, and the David J. Gray Prize in Sociology, it’s no surprise that she excelled in her research pursuits. In 2024, her efforts culminated with a publication in Sage journals titled “Understanding autistic camouflaging: The use of online community discussions and stigmatized identity research.”

  • Associate Professor of History Mackenzie Cooley is one of nine winners of the 2025 Dan David Prize. Winners are awarded $300,000 each to recognize their contribution to the study of the human past and to support their future endeavors, making it the largest history prize in the world.

  • Three jet-setting members of the class of ’25 are packing their bags and heading to new countries through the prestigious Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) awards. They will return to study abroad favorites, embrace new cultures, and serve as bridges between the U.S. and the world. In addition, Jason Le ’23 is the recipient of an ETA Award to Vietnam.

  • Delbert Gonzales ’25, a theater major at Hamilton and winner of the College’s James Soper Merrill Prize this year, is committed to pursuing a career in the theatre industry. However, this path did not always seem a viable option to him. Growing up in Louisiana, Gonzales described how his school didn’t provide much support or many opportunities in theatre. His overall inexperience left him not knowing if he would ever “be good enough” to truly pursue the art.

  • Newly minted alum Anna Richardson ’25 was a writer for Hamilton’s Communications and Marketing office during her time as a student. She was a member of former Rep. Matt Cartwright’s ’83 Linowitz Seminar during the spring semester, and tells here about what she learned.
