Emergency Medical Response

All patrol officers are trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and basic first aid. The Campus Safety Department also enjoys a cooperative working relationship with Hamilton College EMS (HCEMS) and Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps (COCVAC).

Fire Safety

Considerable emphasis is placed on fire safety at Hamilton College.

All residence facilities are equipped with fire and smoke detector equipment that relays an emergency signal to Campus Safety if a problem is detected. Residence Life policies governing student behavior concerning fire safety are strictly enforced. Cooking in areas other than authorized kitchens is prohibited. Toaster ovens and other appliances with open coils are forbidden in all residence facilities.

An ongoing effort is made to encourage students to evaluate their environment and take reasonable precautions to ensure their safety. In accordance with New York State fire codes, Campus Safety conducts routine fire drills throughout the year.

A fire alarm is an order to vacate the building. You should familiarize yourself with evacuation procedures and follow the directions of Community Living staff and Campus Safety Officers. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action.

Personal Safety Escorts

Campus Safety provides escorts to and from any on-campus location for students and community members to ensure safe travel. Escorts are conducted by vehicle or foot patrol. These are single-use services for specific safety concerns, not a regular transportation option or substitute for walking.

Motor Vehicle Assistance

Upon request, the Campus Safety Department assists motorists on campus with disabled vehicles. A portable battery pack can be loaned (in exchange for a valid form of identification) to members of the campus community to jump-start their vehicle.

Parking Permits

All vehicles on campus must be registered with the Campus Safety Department. Parking permits may be obtained at the department office during business hours. Visitors may obtain short-term parking permits for parking privileges on campus. For a more complete listing of college parking regulations, see the Hamilton College Parking Handbook.

Student Room Lockouts

Campus Safety assists students who lock themselves out of their residence room. Except for the residence halls, which are locked at all times, most campus facilities are normally open when classes are in session or by special request coordinated with the Director of Campus Safety.

Emergency Telephones

The Blue Light Emergency Telephone System is a series of telephone boxes strategically located throughout campus to provide assistance to anyone in distress. Overhead blue lights identify the telephones. When the receiver is lifted or the button is pressed, they automatically dial into the Campus Safety office, where an officer will be dispatched to provide assistance.

Lost and Found

If you find any property, please take it to the Campus Safety office!
If you have lost any property, contact Campus Safety to determine if it has been turned in!
The Campus Safety office holds onto meaningful items for a reasonable amount of time. Campus Safety is not responsible or liable for the loss, damage, or safekeeping of personal belongings.

Medical Transportation

The department provides non-emergency transportation to and from the Health Center, classes and students' on-campus residences. Approval for this service is granted through the Health Center. To request this service please contact the Health Center: healthcenter@hamilton.edu
