Nhora Serrano, director of academic technology, teaching, and research services, co-authored an essay, "Looking Back, Looking Forward: A Decade of the Comics Studies Society," published in Inks: The Journal of the Comics Studies Society (Vol. 10, Issue 1, Spring 2026).
Written with leading scholars in the field, the roundtable essay reflects on the founding, growth, and future of the Comics Studies Society over its first decade. Drawing on her experience as the Society's first treasurer and one of the original drafters of its bylaws, Serrano recounts the collaborative work of establishing the organization's infrastructure, nonprofit status, membership model, and financial foundations.
The essay highlights how the Comics Studies Society evolved from an ambitious idea into a leading scholarly organization that today sponsors a major annual conference and publishes the peer-reviewed journal Inks. The piece reflects on the collective efforts that helped shape comics studies as a vibrant and growing academic field while considering future opportunities and challenges for scholars and practitioners.
