"Refocusing the Lens: Pranlal K. Patel’s Photographs of Women at Work in Ahmedabad" hasn’t yet opened at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art. But that hasn’t kept ARTnews from noticing and celebrating the upcoming exhibition on its website and in print. The publication’s  Jan. 23 article, “10 Must-See Museum Photo Shows of Spring 2014,” includes the Wellin exhibition along with shows at prestigious institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery and the High Museum of Art.

Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was quoted in a National Public Radio article titled “Workers May Be Missing, or Maybe Just Retiring” that appeared on hundreds of public radio websites across the country on Jan 22. The article, by NPR’s national economics correspondent Marilyn Geewax, analyzed the possible reasons for the nation’s declining unemployment rate.

Professor of History Thomas Wilson spoke about Confucian philosophy has influenced modern Chinese cuisine and how “…Confucius has become a brand in a sense," in an article in the Chicago Tribune. In “Philosophy influenced Chinese cuisine,” published on Jan. 10, Wilson summarized the trend.  "It's marketable, and Confucius is the friendly face of civility that kind of replaces the scary face of Mao in past days."

Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart has been invited and will attend an all-day summit on Thursday, Jan. 16, hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in Washington.

The national media highlighted Hamilton College in multiple ways throughout 2013, focusing on faculty research and expertise, featuring opinion pieces and announcing new endeavors and special student projects. From The New York Times to NPR’s All Things Considered to The Today Show, the college was visible in media across the country.

"American Ethnographic Film and Personal Documentary: The Cambridge Turn," a book written by Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald, was ranked #2 in a Slant Magazine article titled “The 10 Best Film-Studies Books of 2013.”

An article by Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History Maurice Isserman titled “Starting Out in the Fifties” appears in the Winter 2014 issue of Dissent Magazine. The publication commissioned Isserman to write the article, a history of the magazine for its 60th anniversary celebration in October 2013.

A Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article titled “Liberal arts colleges defending selves on social media,” pointed to former Hamilton Board of Trustees Chairman and Procter & Gamble CEO A.G. Lafley ’69 as an example of a liberal arts graduate who has achieved great success in the business world. 

Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate was featured in an article in the Deseret News National Edition  titled “How religious art makes secular museums into sacred spaces,” published on Jan. 3. Two sacred objects from the Wellin Museum of Art, an Austrian Schwaz Nativity and a pre-Columbian seated funerary urn, were also displayed prominently in the article.

The Huffington Post published an essay by Philip Klinkner, the James S. Sherman Professor of Government, titled “Breaking up California: The Political Impact” in December. Klinkner provided a political analysis of investor Tim Draper’s proposal to split California into six states.
