Initiated following her junior year, Leigh Gialanella’s Emerson Grant-funded summer project resulted in more than the usual final paper and presentation. Under the continuing guidance of Special Collections and Archives Director and Curator Christian Goodwillie, Gialanella ’15 has created an interactive website featuring the Oneida Community’s library, received the Communal Studies Association's Starting Scholar Award for her senior thesis, and begun a master’s degree at the University of Michigan in a tailored track that will lead to a career in digital libraries, digital archives, and/or digital asset management.

Two exhibitions, Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe and Pure Pulp: Contemporary Artists Working in Paper at Dieu Donné, open at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art on Saturday, Feb. 6, with a free, public reception from 4 – 6 p.m. Yun-Fei Ji: The Intimate Universe, curated by Wellin Museum Director Tracy Adler, will be open through July 2. Pure Pulp will be open until April 20. Both shows will travel to other venues.

Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert wrote an essay for the Huffington Post about his experiences working with and for Bernie Sanders in the early 1990s. "Adventures with Bernie," published on Jan. 12, chronicles Gilbert's experiences with Sanders at Hamilton and later as his research director during his first successful run for a seat in the U.S. Congress. 

Tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 13) at 9 p.m., James S. Sherman Professor of Government will present a webcast titled “Continued Struggles in American Race Relations” on the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) of the Methodist Church website. The presentation is part of the GCORR “Vital Conversations” series.

On the heels of two successful edX online course offerings in 2015, Hamilton will debut a third course, Jazz: the Music, the Stories, the Players, presented by Joe Williams Director of the Jazz Archive and Lecturer in Music Performance Monk Rowe beginning on Feb. 2.

This year the national media highlighted the college’s focus on expanding access and equalizing experiences on campus in several major articles. Outlets featuring these Hamilton policies and programs included The Chronicle of Higher Education, Huffington Post and the Hechinger Report. The college also received broad national media attention most recently with the announcement of its incoming president, David Wippman, via an Associated Press news story.

A Dec. 22 American Public Media Marketplace broadcast titled “How 2 percent GDP growth looks in the real economy” featured an interview with Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics. Owen commented on the relatively small gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate, observing that typically, after a recession caused by a financial crisis, growth tends to be slow initially.

Hamilton’s need-blind admission policy is the focus of a Dec. 18 feature story published by Huffington Post titled “How One Top College Ended a Policy that Weeded Out Poor Students.” The article detailed how Hamilton made the decision to eliminate merit scholarships and later to adopt the need-blind policy that eliminates applicants' financial need from consideration in admission decisions.

The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art’s exhibition, Renée Stout: Tales of the Conjure Woman, has been selected by HyperAllergic, the award-winning art blog with over a million readers, as one of the top 10 exhibitions in the United States. The Wellin exhibition of works was listed as #7 by the online publication.

In the last month, several national media outlets – including National Public Radio, National Journal and Inside Higher Ed – have included comments from Hamilton experts in various news stories related to corruption, politics and academe.
