Over the years, through their vision and commitment, individual faculty members have occasionally made an indelible imprint on the academic programs on College Hill. We count you among those rare individuals, for, with regard to Hamilton’s theatre program, your permanent imprint has already and unquestionably become evident.
Thirty-one years ago, you arrived on this Hill as an assistant professor of drama at Kirkland College. It was a time when theatre at Hamilton was little more than an extracurricular activity. You quickly set about developing a comprehensive theatre program for Kirkland and also undertook direction of Minor Theater, not only choosing the season’s offerings but supervising building maintenance and equipment as well.
With the merger of Hamilton and Kirkland colleges, you stayed on to contribute vitally to the development of Hamilton’s own theatre program. In the ensuing years, you directed a host of College productions that were often innovative and risk-taking. You also chaired the Department of Theatre and Dance for some 15 years, instrumentally helping to shape and mold its development.
Outside of the department, the classroom and the Minor Theater venue, you have served Hamilton as a member of its key faculty committees, executive director and producer of its Performing Arts Series, and as College Marshal. Within the community at large, you have been an enthusiastic advocate for the arts, as reflected in your activities as a member of the board of the Kirkland Art Center, a teaching artist with the Central New York Community Arts Council and as a member of Hamilton’s Town-Gown Committee.
True to your ardent belief that theatre is empowering in its recognition of the human condition and celebration of human character, in addition to being great fun, you have been the theatre program’s guiding light virtually since its inception on College Hill. For that contribution, as well as your many other contributions through three decades, the Alumni Association takes great pleasure in presenting you with its Distinguished Service Award.
