Course Description: For more than 1000 years following the breakup of the Western Roman Empire, the Eastern Roman, or Byzantine, Empire, with its capital at Constantinople, preserved the legacy of imperial Rome in the medieval Mediterranean. This lecture-discussion course will explore the history of the Byzantine Empire, from the reign of Constantine the Great (ca. 330) to the fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Turks in 1453. Religious, social, and political developments will be considered, along with medieval Greek contributions to the economy and culture of the wider Mediterranean world.
