This course will explore the history of the radical politics in African American culture during the twentieth century with a specific focus on music and punk rock. Students will read and learn from a variety of activists, artists, and thinkers as the course explores how Black radicalism in the United States shifted and evolved from the 1960s through the 2000s. This is a writing intensive course that will introduce students to a history of resistance politics by African Americans on the fringes of the mainstream. Students will use the readings to engage these thinkers and historical periods as they develop their own analysis around Black radicalism’s impact upon on the U.S. in the past and its legacy in the present.
