Course Description:

The discovery of Plate Tectonics is one of the great scientific revolutions of the 20th century. This course is a deep dive into the foundational observations and the remarkable ingenuity that led to a complete rethinking of the way our planet works and unlocked a new era of scientific discovery. Throughout the course, students will compare early seminal observations with modern datasets to gain an understanding of the current state of knowledge and the scientific questions that still remain unresolved. Students will learn to analyze a wide array of interdisciplinary data, including paleontological, geophysical, and geochemical datasets. The course will include selected historical readings, primary literature, problem sets and a final project.
