Course Description:

For countries emerging from civil war, the process of forging peace is fraught and high-stakes. Missteps during this period can lead to a resurgence of violence. In this course, students explore the challenges facing peacebuilding efforts, and the strategies and interests of key players within post-conflict transitions. We begin by asking how and if countries negotiate peace agreements, and what steps the international community can take to help ensure its success. We also examine the role of peacekeeping forces, the long-term efforts to rebuild government institutions, and the pitfalls involved in post-conflict justice and reconciliation.
