Developing the ability to communicate in a clear, organized, and effective way is a central goal of a liberal arts education — and a prerequisite for a successful career. That’s why we established centers for writing and speaking.

Writing Center

All writers, no matter how strong, can get better, and good writing is an invaluable life skill. The Nesbitt-Johnston Writing Center was established in 1987 to support student writing at Hamilton. Nine in 10 seniors report having had at one or more individual Writing Center conferences during their four years.

Oral Communication Center

Hamilton is one of only three top liberal arts colleges with an independent Oral Communication Center. In fact, students requested such a center. Recently, the faculty adopted a “speaking intensive” designation for courses that help students develop their oral presentation skills.
