Center for Intersectional Feminism (CIF) hosted five incredible events this October in celebration of the annual Sex Positivity Week! Organizers broke down sex myths, fought back against stigmas about sex, educated the campus, and celebrated the joy of safe sex alongside campus partners and fellow students.
The week kicked off with a Meet Your Title IX Coordinator event on Monday, October 6th, where students got to know and love Hamilton’s brand new Title IX coordinator Debbie Owens! CIF emphasized the importance of feeling comfortable with the Coordinator supporting each and every student on campus, protecting their right to a campus safe from gendered discrimination and harm. We love Debbie!
Second up was a conversation on Hookup culture with the Sexual Misconduct Assault and Report Team (SMART) on Tuesday. Attendees interrogated heteronormativity and gender roles, touched on how to define a “hookup,” discussed building a culture around consent, questioned what creates a safe environment, and confronted culture and stigma around communication. Students were committed to being a force for sex-positive, community healing, and stigma-fighting change for the better.
CIF partnered with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) next for an evening of self defense, trivia, and empowerment on Thursday. Attendees were taught to do a tripod sweep and bump sweep escape, followed by trivia with prizes for an overall night of fun. Thanks BJJ!
Body positive sculpting was next, accompanied by piles of colorful air-dry clay set to the soundtrack of 2000’s music videos. The event reminded attendees to center body positivity when building a sex-positive culture, because There’s no such thing as the “right” body for sex; every body is a right body! By embracing body diversity and rejecting narrow beauty standards, people can feel more comfortable, empowered, and present in their own bodies, leading to healthier and more enjoyable experiences.
The week ended with a bang (of sorts) with Sex Bingo! The final event of the week was a full house, with around 100 attendees arriving to the annex drenched in stunning decorations and a curated playlist. In partnership with Sadove and The Office of Community Living, Community Advisors and the CIF Eboard hosted countless rounds of silly, sex-themed bingo and trivia. After getting a bingo, winners were quizzed on affirmative consent, sexual health, gender and sexuality, anatomy, and sex positions before they were sent to the prize table.
Overall, the week was a smashing success. In a feat of impressive planning, CIF and community partners pulled off five back to back events, reminding the campus of the importance of sex positivity. Organizers worked endlessly to promote healthier relationships, improve mental health, and increase sexual health awareness by reducing shame and encouraging open, non-judgmental communication about sexuality. A big thank you to the incredible work of CIF student organizers!!
