January 14, 2020
Members of the LITS Research and Instructional Design team were recently invited to present a webinar for the AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) Building Better Curriculum Webinar Series.
“Down the Rabbit Holes: Teaching & Learning Extended Reality Technologies” was presented by Associate Director for Digital Learning and Research Nhora Serrano, Instructional Designer and Digital Media and 3D Technology Specialist Ben Salzman, and Instructional Designer Doug Higgins. It was based on the on the group’s workshop of the same name, presented last fall at the EDUCAUSE Conference in Chicago.
In the webinar, Serrano used her Dream a Little Dream: Virtual Reality & Literature course as an example in a discussion of course design, learning objectives, and assessment.
Salzman presented “Case Studies: Examples of XR Technologies Transforming Teaching and Learning.” He included a discussion about the “Campus of the Future XR Research Project” and some of the ways in which XR technology is being used at Hamilton. Salzman also discussed budget, portability, and implementation considerations in a segment of the webinar on “Equipment Recommendations”.
Higgins talked about content generation, including use of pre-existing content — such as experiences available online — and whether to use an internal development team or to hire an outside company for content development.
