Faculty and Open Access at Wellesley College

In 2013, Wellesley College’s Academic Council unanimously approved an open access policy. On September 11, three Wellesley faculty and librarians who have been intimately involved in both the conversations that preceded the policy’s adoption and in its subsequent implementation joined LITS staff via skype to discuss the policy.

Participants learned about the open access alternative to traditional publishing, why and how Wellesley College decided to pursue an open access policy, and the challenges they have encountered implementing it. Topics included understanding the difference between "green" and "gold" open access, using waivers to accommodate author or publisher requirements, and the importance of an institutional repository at Wellesley.

Presenters:
Graham Henderson is Wellesley's Scholarly Communications Librarian and College  Copyright Officer. In this role, he guides the overall administration of the Open Access program at Wellesley, as well as all copyright issues for the College. He received a J.D. from Vermont Law School prior to getting his M.L.S. from Simmons.

Takis Metaxas is a Professor of Computer Science at Wellesley College. As the Faculty Director  of the Scholarly Communications Group, he helped to implement Wellesley’s Open Access Policy. He received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Dartmouth, and has been a visiting scientist at MIT, the Sydney University in Australia, and at Harvard.

Raymond Schmidt is Manager, Cataloging and Metadata Information Services at Wellesley, where he leads the development of metadata standards for institutional digital initiatives. He received his B.A. in Philosophy from East Carolina University and his M.S. in Library and Information Science from Simmons College.
