Digital Commons Showcase

By Reid Larson

Join us on Thursday, April 7, at noon in the Burke Library All Night Reading Room for a demonstration of Digital Commons, a web platform that provides faculty with a place to archive and share their scholarship. The event is part of the Library and Information Technology Services’ (LITS) ongoing initiative to help faculty make their scholarly work more widely available to other scholars, students, and the general public.

Bepress’ Digital Commons is used by colleges and universities across the country to make their faculty’s peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, working papers, and other scholarly output freely available. It currently hosts digital repositories for nearly half of the Oberlin Group, a consortium of 80 libraries at America’s top liberal arts colleges. Digital Commons also hosts the repositories of many larger and medium sized research institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Yale University.

Research placed in Digital Commons is highly discoverable by major search engines like Google, Bing, and Google Scholar. It’s also indexed by discovery services like Hamilton’s OneSearch. In addition, faculty who submit their work to their institution’s institutional repository automatically receive monthly download reports of activity related to their papers.

Bepress representative Doug Cannon will be on hand to answer questions. And, of course, lunch will be served.
