Couper Phi Beta Kappa 2016: The Landscape of Scholarly Publishing

Mark Edington, director of the Amherst College Press; Oya Y. Rieger, associate university librarian for scholarly resources and preservation services at Cornell University, and Jerry Singerman, senior humanities editor at the University of Pennsylvania Press will participate in a panel discussion titled "The Landscape of Scholarly Publishing," moderated by Lisa Trivedi, professor of history at Hamilton College. The event will take place at noon on October 20, 2016 in the Burke Library All Night Reading Room. Lunch will be served.
Mark Edington is the director of the Amherst College Press, an open-access scholarly press focusing on work in the liberal arts and humanities. Appointed in 2014 as the first director of the Amherst College Press, he has served as the senior executive officer of interdisciplinary research centers at Harvard, including the Center for the Study of World Religions and the Harvard Decision Science Laboratory. His work in academic publishing has encompassed directing the publications program of an independent think tank focused on issues of international security and foreign policy, and as a consulting editor at Dædalus, the journal of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Oya Y. Rieger is the associate university librarian for scholarly resources and preservation services and the program director for arXiv at Cornell University. Her program involves the full lifecycle management of digital and print scholarly content, including selection, creation, design, preservation and conservation. She has provided leadership in various publishing initiatives that promotes new and sustainable models of scholarly communication. She has written and presented extensively on business modeling and sustainability issues associated with scholarly collections. Her research interests focus on the role of digital content, tools, and methodologies on research, teaching, learning, and creative expression. Rieger holds an M.S. in Public Administration (University of Oklahoma) and an M.S. in Information Systems (Columbia University). She received her Ph.D. in Communication with a concentration in Human-Computer Interaction from Cornell University. Partnering with Cornell faculty, she has co-taught courses in Human Computer Interaction, Scholarly Communication, Digital Humanities, and Design and Visual Research in the Digital Era.
Jerry Singerman is senior humanities editor at the University of Pennsylvania Press, where he is responsible for acquiring books in medieval, early modern, late ancient, literary, and Jewish studies and history of the book. He holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Harvard University and has taught at Bates College and the Maryland Institute College of Art. He is a past recipient of Robert L. Kindrick–CARA Award for Outstanding Service to Medieval Studies awarded by the Medieval Academy of America, the only editor to be so honored.
Lisa Trivedi, professor of history at Hamilton College, has published on subjects including nationalism, women, and photography in modern South Asia. Trivedi served on the Board of ASIANetwork, a consortium of 160+ liberal arts colleges with programs in Asian Studies, and has been co-editor of ASIANetwork Exchange: A Journal of Asian Studies for the Liberal Arts, the open access journal of the association since 2011. She serves on the inaugural editorial board of Lever Press on behalf of Hamilton College.
