During the winter break, Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Zhuoyi Wang delivered three invited lectures and served as the featured speaker for two post-screening discussions while traveling in Asia. These engagements took place at National Taitung University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Communication University of Zhejiang, Duke Kunshan University, and the Movie Movie Cinema in Shanghai.
Wang’s winter talks addressed how film can be used to teach Taiwan’s diverse histories in a U.S.-based classroom, Asian American cinema’s challenges to Hollywood’s gendered and racial paradigms, and the comic mechanisms and cultural context of the recent Chinese feminist-inspired blockbuster Her Story (2024).
Wang also delivered featured post-screening talks following screenings of Pavilion of Women (2001) at Duke Kunshan Un, and Miserable at Middle Age (1949) at the Movie Movie Cinema, engaging audiences in public conversation on film, culture, and representation.
