The Routledge Companion to Asian Cinemas, which features a chapter by Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Zhuoyi Wang, has been honored with the NETPAC 1st Aruna Vasudev Award for Best Book on Asia. The award, presented by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC), was announced on Feb. 18 at the 31st Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas.
Wang’s chapter, “Between a Quest for Artistic Purity and Propaganda: The Case of Taiwan Wangshi (My Bittersweet Taiwan, 2004),” examines the duality in Taiwan’s representation in the 2004 PRC-made film My Bittersweet Taiwan. His research highlights how the filmmakers sought to balance artistic expression with political messaging, negotiating between the PRC’s pro-unification stance and the influence of New Taiwanese Cinema on PRC filmmakers.
