Hamilton College’s Black and Latinx Student Union (BLSU) joined over 700 participants from other colleges and universities at the 23rd Annual Black Solidarity Conference, held at Yale University from Feb. 8 to 11.

Hamilton College and the village of Clinton joined together on Feb. 9 through 11 to celebrate 100 years of hockey. Albert Prettyman was the Hamilton athletic director who iced over a tennis court in Clinton to introduce the first ever hockey game in our area in February 1918. The community thanked Prettyman with the weekend-long event.

Monk Rowe, the Joe Williams Director of the Jazz Archive and Lecturer in Music Performance (Saxophone) will be honored with the 2018 Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYs) Music Educator of the Year award on March 2.

The Hamilton in NYC Program is off to a busy and exciting start. On Jan. 31, the group met with David Maddox, founder and director of the Nature of Cities, “an international platform to share diverse, transformative ideas about cities as ecosystems of people, nature, and infrastructure.”

Matt Glassman ’00, a senior fellow at the Government Affairs Institute at Georgetown, penned an opinion piece for The New York Times that was published Feb. 7.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Nhora Lucía Serrano participated in two panels at the 2018 Modern Language Association (MLA) Conference in January.

Hamilton College Performing Arts begins the spring season with jazz vocalist Alicia Olatuja on Friday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

The Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art presents two concurrent exhibitions through June 10. The work within both exhibitions reflects current issues related to history, geography, boundaries, immigration, citizenship, community, and culture, among others.

Christian Goodwillie, director and curator of Special Collections and Archives at Burke Library, traveled to Saint Kitts and Nevis from Jan. 27 to Feb. 1. Goodwillie is a member of the Charlestown (Nevis) World Heritage Committee, which is seeking recognition of Charlestown as a World Heritage City from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

In her talk “Policy, Translation, Estimation, and Inference: When Big Data Isn’t Enough,” Shauna Sweet ’03 returned to campus to discuss her career experience in applied analytics.
