The Hamilton College Department of Music presented Lady in the Dark as this year's choir musical on Feb. 3-5, in Wellin Hall. Lady in the Dark features music by Kurt Weill, lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and book by Moss Hart. The fully staged musical was directed by G. Roberts Kolb with choreography by Nancy Long and set and lighting design by William DiPaolo.

Heather Buchman, associate professor of music and director of the Hamilton College Orchestra, conducted Symphony Syracuse on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Syracuse Civic Center. A review that appeared in the Post-Standard the following day described her performance. “Buchman’s every gesture, every breath, was purposeful, and the Symphony Syracuse artists responded in kind, turning in a performance marked by precision as well as passion.”

Hamilton College will host its 13th annual Gospel Celebration, “The Storm is Passing Over,” music ministry and worship celebration on Saturday, Oct. 22, from 7-9 p.m. in the Chapel. This event is free and open to the public, including colleges, churches and communities from the Finger Lakes to the Mohawk Valley.

In seeking to play a constructive role in the ongoing bankruptcy of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and the future of symphonic music in Central New York, Hamilton College is hosting “Summit on the Symphony” on Sunday, October 16. ’The event will bring together leaders from institutions of higher education and government and stakeholder arts organizations in the region, many of whom have been engaged in working on the future of a professional orchestra here.

The Hamilton College Performing Arts continues its 2011 series with the SFJAZZ Collective performing the music of Stevie Wonder on Friday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m., in Wellin Hall. Immediately before the concert, Professor of Music “Doc” Woods will present a pre-concert talk in Café Opus on the topics of Wonder’s music and arranging for modern jazz.

For the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks Associate Professor of Music Heather Buchman conducted a special concert for remembrance and healing at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Syracuse. The concert was organized by Syracuse-based theater director Victoria King who witnessed the attacks at close hand.

The Hamilton College Department of Music begins the season with the annual Fall Faculty Concert on Friday, Sept. 9 at 8 p.m., in Wellin Hall. The concert will feature Hamilton College faculty artists performing solo, duo and small ensemble pieces for voice, piano, woodwinds, strings and brass. The musical selections are varied and range from Mozart to jazz artist Paquito D’Rivera.
