  • The Kirkland Town Library (KTL) and Hamilton’s Burke Library have announced the schedule of events for the program “America’s Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music from Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway.”  The first session, Blues and Gospel Music, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m., at the Kirkland Town Library. All screenings are free and open to the public.

  • The sixth annual Hamilton Serves took place on Wednesday, Aug. 28, with all 492 members of the Class of 2017 and new transfer students going out to volunteer at 57 community organizations. Hamilton Serves began as an Orientation activity in 2008 with the class of 2012.

  • Hamilton College will open its 202nd year with the traditional Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 4:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall. Members of the administration will welcome students and new faculty, and academic achievement prizes will be awarded to students.

  • Hamilton’s 6th annual “Cram & Scram” reuse/rebuy sale will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 27 and 28, in Sage Rink. Tuesday’s sale hours are 12:30 - 5 p.m., and Wednesday’s sale will take place from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

  • Members of Hamilton’s class of 2017 arrive on campus on Friday, Aug. 23. More than 360 first-year students took part in pre-orientation programs Adirondack Adventure and Outreach Adventure. The remaining members of the class will arrive and move in for New Student Orientation, which begins on Saturday, Aug. 24.

  • Adirondack Adventure (AA) and Outreach Adventure (OA), Hamilton’s pre-orientation programs for new students, welcomed  308 members of the Class of 2017 on Friday, Aug. 16. This year marks the largest AA/OA participation ever, with 64 percent of first-year students participating in OA and AA.

  • Patrick Reynolds, vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2013-14 academic year, including five tenure-track appointments, 21 visiting professors and instructors, and six teaching fellows. New tenure-track appointments are Courtney Gibbons, Alexandra List, Max Majireck, Seth Schermerhorn and Xavier Tubau.

  • Three Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the college’s board of trustees during a recent meeting. The board granted tenure to Joana Sabadell-Nieto (Hispanic Studies), Katherine Terrell (English) and Christopher Vasantkumar (anthropology).

  • Hamilton’s project to digitally archive video-taped readings, personal documents, letters and manuscripts of the celebrated Kashmiri-American poet Agha Shahid Ali (1949-2001) was featured in The Kashmir Reader.

  • Nicholas Yepes ’15 has been awarded a Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace from Middlebury College. The merit-based scholarship provides full room, board and tuition to attend one of Middlebury College’s Language Schools. These 100 fellowships are made possible by a generous gift from the late Kathryn Davis, to address today’s critical need for increased language proficiency in the United States.
