Dr. Noliwe Rooks, associate director of the Center for African American Studies at Princeton University, will join Hamilton students in a panel discussion on hair and self-expression on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ. The panel will be moderated by Professor of Classics and Africana Studies Shelley Haley and is free and open to the public.  

Hamilton’s annual FebFest concluded on Feb. 18 with the always popular Chili Cookoff in the Little Pub. For the second consecutive year Nile Berry ’14, Michael Kendall ’14 and Carolina Geiger ’14 won the cook-off, with their “We're not cold, we're chili” entry.

Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was interviewed for a story on NPR on Feb. 17 after Congress approved legislation to continue a payroll tax holiday and extend benefits for the long-term unemployed.

FebFest, Hamilton’s annual winter carnival, celebrated Valentine’s Day with a chocolate tasting in Sadove Student Center living room on Feb. 14. Students piled their plates with chocolate mousse, chocolate cheesecake and other decadent desserts. They also had the opportunity to decorate Valentine’s Day cards for their sweethearts.

David Levy, professor at the University of Washington Information School, will present a lecture, “Always On: Exploring Student Attitudes toward Information Technology,” on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ.  The event is free and open to the public.

Author David Pratt ’80 will read from his work Bob the Book on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 4:15 p.m, in the Days-Massolo Center. The reading is free and open to the public.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will visit Hamilton College on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m. in Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The screening is sponsored by the Hamilton Outing Club. Tickets are $8 for students and $10 for the public.

To commemorate Black History Month, the Days-Massolo Center will screen the comedy documentary Good Hair on Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 4:15 p.m., in the Center on College Hill Road. The screening is free and open to the public.

A lack of snow isn’t enough to put a halt to FebFest 2012. “Winter Candy Land” will take place on Feb. 11-18 with a chocolate tasting, Chili cook-off, ice skating party and more planned. Many events are free and others require a $5 button that can be purchased in Beinecke or at each event. Some FebFest highlights follow.

Sixteen members of the Class of 2012 were elected to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa at a meeting on Feb. 8.
