A summer internship with the United Nations World Health Organization Liaison Office in Washington, D.C., was exactly what Hamilton College senior Wangechi Thuo was seeking. But the internship was unpaid, and Thuo, a world politics major from Nairobi, Kenya, thought she would have to choose between making money during the summer to offset her college expenses or pursuing a “dream” internship.

A Hamilton student was found dead in his room by Campus Safety officers late Friday evening, June 24. President Stewart issued a note to the campus community via e-mail the next day. Excerpts from that note and updated information follow.

The town hall-style meeting featuring Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart, originally planned for April 25, has been rescheduled for Monday, May 23, at 7 p.m. in the Kirkland Town Library.

A New York City event originally scheduled to focus on the Excelsior Capital Campaign was recast to address alumni and parent questions surrounding the Kirkland Project's speaking invitation extended to University of Colorado Professor Ward Churchill.  Approximately 150 alumni and parents gathered at the University Club Thursday evening (Feb. 17) to hear President Joan Hinde Stewart speak.

Nancy Rabinowitz, in a telephone call to Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart Thursday night (Feb. 10), announced her resignation as director of the Kirkland Project.

A failed transformer caused a power outage on the North Campus Tuesday (Feb. 8) morning resulting in a loss of server capability throughout the Hamilton campus. Although Web servers were restored by mid-day, mail servers remained out of service until early Wednesday morning. Those sending e-mail from off-campus would have had that e-mail held on their mail systems to retry again when our system was brought up. That e-mail will probably not be sent until Wednesday morning. If your system returned a message to you indicating that it could not deliver your e-mail to a Hamilton address, we suggest you send it again. All e-mail services are now functioning properly. We apologize for any inconvenience.

We have done our best to protect what we hold most dear, the right to speak, think and study freely. But there is a higher responsibility that this institution carries, and that is the safety and security of our students, faculty, staff and the community in which we live.  Credible threats of violence have been directed at the College and members of the panel. These threats have been turned over to the police. President Joan Stewart sent an all-campus memorandum on Sunday, Jan. 30, updating Hamilton faculty, students and staff about the status of the pending visit by Ward Churchill later in the week. Mr. Churchill is speaking on campus as part of a panel discussion sponsored by the Kirkland Project.

In the days and weeks immediately following September 11th, Hamilton joined with the world community in denouncing the terrorist acts of that tragic morning. We all share deeply in the pain of the families who lost loved ones. Many people view Ward Churchill's comments concerning 9/11 as repugnant and disparaging the 3,000 people killed that day, including three Hamilton alumni and the father of a current Hamilton student.

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends, As you may be aware, it has been a difficult time on College Hill because of a controversy surrounding Susan Rosenberg, who was scheduled to teach a half-credit course this spring. Last week, she withdrew from the appointment, citing the best interests of all parties concerned, but the events leading to that resolution have brought considerable attention to the College. Let me provide some background and information about the process and the debate that has taken place.
