Meet the Tutors

Gabrielle Brihn ’26

Gabrielle is a sophomore from Cleveland, Ohio planning to major in Creative Writing with minors in Math and Philosophy. She is also part of the Red Weather poetry editorial board and club soccer. Outside of writing, she enjoys reading, learning to play guitar, and, most recently, crocheting. She is an avid La Croix fan and brought three cases with her to school this year.

Fiona Bristol ’25

Fiona is a junior from South Orange, New Jersey majoring in History. Outside of the Writing Center, you can find her working behind the greeter desk at the Wellin, spending too much time browsing a good bookstore, or watching Gilmore Girls for the third time. If you have any podcast recommendations, send them her way.

Kate Broeksmit ’26

Kate is a sophomore from Chevy Chase, Maryland. She intends to double major in History and Art History. When she’s not tutoring at the Writing Center, you can find her on a walk in the Glen, redecorating her room (it just never seems to be done), or on the water with the Rowing team. Off campus she loves skiing, hiking, visiting museums, and frequenting farmers markets.

Rachel is a junior from Bow, New Hampshire who is majoring in Literature. When not in the Writing Center, she works as an Adirondack Adventure Orientation Leader, a Digital Media Tutor, and a Red Weather Poetry Board editor. She loves to eat her lunches in the McEwan booths and to play Spikeball on Minor field with her friends.

Mia is a junior from Bulgaria (yes, like the split squats) majoring in Computer Science and World Politics. You can usually find her on the hunt for a spare classroom in List or speedwalking between KJ and the Science Center. She enjoys talking about her cat and home country with friends, reading webtoons, geolocating, and singing and playing the guitar.

Bayley is a junior from Los Angeles, California majoring in Sociology and minoring in Art. When not in the Writing Center, she is making fried rice at the cooking station in Commons, working on her oil paintings in KTSA, or taking a nap. She is a dedicated KU basketball fan and obsessive Spotify playlist maker.

Deanna Durben ’25

Deanna is a junior double majoring in Psychology and Sociology; she wants to do autism research in the future. She’s from Taiwan and desperately misses her four cats, Pumpkin, Bentley, Meower, and Callie. When not swamped with coursework, she loves books, jigsaw puzzles, and felting (with Netflix on in the background).

Emily is a sophomore born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada (pronounced Nuh-va-duh) who currently resides somewhere north of the middle of nowhere in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She plans to major in Creative Writing with a minor in History. When she isn't geeking out about either of those, though, you can find her fueling her coffee (not just caffeine) addiction, giggling incessantly, cooking and being a foodie, listening to jazz, broadcasting music for WHCL, knitting another scarf, walking in the glen, or rewatching and fully quoting movies and TV shows. You'll wish you never said something to remind her of a line in a movie or a lyric in a song.

Ivy is a sophomore from Kennebunkport, Maine. She intends to double major in Environmental Studies and Hispanic Studies. On campus, she is also a Community Advisor. In her free time, she loves to play the violin, go for runs in the glen, and paint watercolors. She also enjoys R&B music, The Office, hikes, and good espresso.

Nick is a sophomore from Marietta, Georgia. He intends to double major in Philosophy and Government. Outside of the Writing Center, you can find him on Frisbee Field playing for the Hot Saucers or in the WHCL studio co-hosting his radio show. He is obsessed with Aaron Sorkin’s screenwriting and can proudly recite many scenes from The West Wing by heart. He also likes all things outside and appreciates quiet walks in the Glen.

Alex Kropaneva ’25

Alex is a junior from Brooklyn, New York who is concentrating in Creative Writing with an intended minor in Religious Studies. She has an intense fascination with Hogwarts-themed Pomodoro sessions and refuses to do any work without one playing in the background. When not in the Writing Center, you can find her leading roundtable book discussions at Know Thy Shelf, exploring the Adirondack mountains with HOC, or writing poetry in the nearest glen (yes, even in the snowy winter—try it!).

Claire Lazar ’26

Claire is a sophomore from New York City who plans to double major in Psychology and Art History (How do those two things relate? She hopes to find out!). She also works as an Intro Psych TA. When she’s not in the Writing Center, Claire can usually be found haunting the Commons coffee station, listening to the latest episode of This American Life, or searching the Glen for new hidden curiosities.

David Li ’24

David is a senior from Shanghai, China, majoring in Theatre with a double minor in Sociology and Creative Writing. He calls KTSA his second home and is part of Untitled@Large, the premier (and only) student-run theatre company on campus. When not in the Writing Center, he can be found listening to indie rock, snacking on mango slices, and taking meditative strolls across campus. He dreams of owning a vintage typewriter.

Lucy is a sophomore from Queens who is interested in Environmental Studies, Anthropology, and Literature, although her major is undecided. She enjoys crosswords, reading late into the night, and anything involving chocolate. Outside of the Writing Center, there is a high probability you will find her doing puzzles in the library or wandering the Rogers Glen.

Elise is a junior from Holden, Massachusetts concentrating in Environmental Studies and minoring in Public Policy. On campus, she also works as a Community Advisor in Root. In her free time, you can find Elise performing with the Dance Team at football and basketball games. Some of her favorite things include Glen walks, Dunkin iced coffee, Wes Anderson’s filmography, and Taylor Swift music.

Alejandro Sosa Hernández ’26

Alejandro is a sophomore raised in De Pere, Wisconsin by Yucatec immigrant parents. He intends to double-major in Creative Writing and Japanese. He is passionate about empowering the voices of his fellow members of the Hispanic and LGBTQ+ communities. Outside of the Writing Center, he enjoys relistening to Lady Gaga's ARTPOP, working on the second draft of his future debut novel, eating fried chicken, reading queer romance stories, auditioning for Theatre Department productions, and wearing as much purple as he can.

Mika is a junior from New York City, majoring in History and minoring in Asian Studies and Jurisprudence, Law & Justice Studies. On campus, she’s also the intern for Pre-Health Advising and is the Features Editor for the Spectator. In her free time, she watches UFC, plays TTRPGs, and consumes any and all vampire media. She mostly works at the Writing Center for the free candy.

Maximilian (Max) Wohlfeld ’25

Max is a junior from Weston, Massachusetts, although he will tell you he's "from Boston." A History major and Econ minor, you can usually find him in the KJ Atrium or, if he has really procrastinated on his work, locked away in the History Resource Room. A heritage German speaker, he is happy to help any German students seeking help with their writing. In his free time, Max enjoys cooking, outdoor physical activity, grand-strategy video games, and making a racket on his guitar (he needs to practice a little more often).

Yuxuan is a sophomore who is considering his major interests in Neuroscience and French. On campus, he plays for the club soccer team and is an active member of the ROOTS Society for students of color in STEM. In his free time, he can be found reading, playing chess, and going on walks in the glen.

Anna is a junior from Freeport, Maine majoring in Environmental Studies and minoring in Government. On campus, she also tutors French at the Language Center and helps direct the Harvest. Some of Anna’s favorite things are falafel, farmers’ markets, and colorful pens. In her free time, she can be found making crêpes in her dorm kitchen, drinking McEwen spa water, and trying (mostly unsuccessfully) to learn tennis.
