The Lorrel B. Nichols and Frederic H. Nichols Scholarship
The Lorrel B. Nichols and Frederic H. Nichols Scholarship honors the vital role that Hamilton College played in the lives of the Nichols family. It was established by Frederic H. Nichols, Class of 1960.
The Nichols family has a long legacy at Hamilton starting with Lorrel B. Nichols' great uncle Hervey B. Nichols, a member of the class of 1851.Lorrel Nichols, a member of the class of 1922, came to Hamilton from Buffalo, New York, was a member of the Student Army Training Corps (SATC) of 1918, earned a Bachelor of Science degree, and served as a senior manager of a paper manufacturing company in Walpole, Massachusetts. He faithfully served his alma mater as a member of the Alumni Council, the New England Alumni Association, Alumni Fund volunteer, reunion volunteer, and by representing Hamilton at the inauguration of a college president. Following graduation from Hamilton, and a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy, Frederic Hone Nichols '60 earned a Ph.D. in Oceanography from the University of Washington, and became a member of Sigma Xi, the scientific research honor society. He married Kirstin Clark Nichols, also a scientist, and they lived in California where they raised three sons, Matthew, John, and Andrew. Frederic, who worked for the U.S. Geological Survey, spoke at Hamilton in 1980 on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Sigma Xi, and volunteered for the Career Center and as a capital campaign volunteer. As undergraduates, both Lorrel and Frederic were members of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.
