The Hamilton College Department of Dance and Movement Studies will present its annual Spring Dance Concert on Friday, March 8, and Saturday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall. The performance will feature Hamilton student dancers and choreography by Hamilton faculty Elaine Heekin, Sandra Stanton-Cotter, Bruce Walczyk, and Paris Wilcox, in addition to guest choreographer John Castagna.
Castagna, a resident choreographer of The Ballet Collective in Los Angeles, Calif., joins Hamilton for another year of new contemporary ballet. His piece, titled AGE of ANXIETY, will be set to excerpts from Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2.
Catacombs, choreographed by Professor of Dance and Movement Studies Elaine Heekin, is set to the Gusla Male Choir’s Old Bulgarian and Russian Orthodox Chants.
Sandra Stanton-Cotter, lecturer in dance and movement studies, will present First and Last Night set to “Allegretto” and “Vivace” from Chamber Music of Bernard Herrmann and Jerome Moross.
Open House at the Stickland Academy of Filipino Martial Arts, choreographed by Professor of Dance and Music Studies Bruce Walczyk, will be presented in a “lecture/demonstration” format utilizing set patterns and structured improvisation. The use of fire hardened rattan sticks such as olisi, bangkaw, olisi palad, serrada olisi, and yantok, along with Richard Lloyd on percussion, help to create the soundscore for this piece that blends the visual and sound output of various rompido, abaniko, sinawali, and sumbrada patterns.
Visiting Instructor of Dance and Movement Studies Paris Wilcox ’95 will present Bach Be Brevis, which will include Jackson Bedward ’21, Haley Raphael ’20, and Marjorie Wang ’22.
