Poet Linwood Rumney ’04, the author of Abandoned Earth, returned to Hamilton on Sept. 20 to read from his work.
Abandoned Earth is the winner of the 17th Annual Gival Press Poetry Award. Rumney’s poems and nonfiction essays have appeared widely in journals, including North American Review, Crab Orchard Review, Kenyon Review Online, Ploughshares, Puerto del Sol, and The Southern Review.
He spoke with Kyra Richardson ’20 about how Hamilton “is the place where I first began to think of myself as a poet.” Rumney also offered advice for creative writing students: “study broadly and foster an eclectic mentality.”
Rumney teaches at Cincinnati's Union Institute & University, which recently honored him with a SOCHE Faculty Excellence Award.
