Associate Professor of French and Francophone Studies Claire Mouflard chaired a panel and presented a paper at the Council of European Studies conference in Lyon, France, in July. The theme of the conference was "Radical Europe: Violence, Emancipation, and Reaction."
In her paper titled "Activism in Urban Spaces: Remapping Colonialism," Mouflard argued that the way French police and the judicial system exert their authority on different social movements is an indicator of the State’s neocolonial regulation of disruptive identities. In particular, Mouflard discussed the discrepancies between ethnically coded protests which have been outright banned in defiance of the people's right to freedom of speech, and other demonstrations that have been allowed to proceed in spite of their far-right affiliations.
