“I'm a people person in my community, in the sense that when I feel comfortable and supported by the people I'm around, I definitely lean into my more people-oriented, excitable, exuberant self,” Martin said. “I went to Hamilton because I loved the sense of community there, and I get excited about bringing people together.”
Her passion for fostering community lends itself perfectly to Martin’s roles as class president and member of her class’s reunion planning committee. The Class of 2021’s five-year Reunion Weekend is coming up in June, and Martin and her classmates are eagerly anticipating their return to the Hill. As Martin speaks with classmates, she’s met by an abundance of gratitude and enthusiasm.
“We’re really excited to step onto Hamilton's campus with a totally new perspective and appreciation for a place where we got to make so many memories,” Martin said. “We get to look back on the place that started the foundation of our adult lives, and we’ll be there to have fun and be fully present.”
Martin was recruited to join Hamilton’s swimming and diving team, and her recruiting trip at Hamilton stood out among the rest of her college visits.
“I had a warm, welcoming team try to convince me to come to Hamilton,” Martin said. “The overwhelming sense of belonging that every single person had on campus was wonderful.”
“It’s so rare to get to go back, and with the June weather, and with everyone there, why not take the opportunity?”
The warmth that Martin first felt as a young recruit grew stronger and deeper. From bonding with teammates during conference travel to connecting over meals in the dining halls with her classmates to welcoming new students into the fold as an orientation leader, Martin built a home and a family at Hamilton.
Living in New York City, Martin’s planned gatherings with Hamilton friends and chance meetings at the gym with fellow alumni sporting Hamilton T-shirts help the big city feel a little smaller and homier.
She’s always excited to attend regional alumni events in the city, and in conversation with young alumni at one such event last fall, Martin learned that the role of class president was open. As swim team captain and as an orientation leader, Martin took on leadership positions that aligned with her passions, so becoming class president was a natural fit.
“I just really wanted to be able to contribute to the leadership of Hamilton in a way that helps bring people together,” Martin said.
Although Martin understands that summertime gets busy with events and travel, she’s sure that her class’s five-year reunion will be a uniquely joyful time.
“It’s so rare to get to go back, and with the June weather, and with everyone there, why not take the opportunity?” Martin said. “And even if you don't know people coming back, I think there's always the opportunity to continue building your Hamilton community. In my mind, it’s like, ‘Why wouldn’t you come back?’”
