The New York City program made the most of recent early-spring weather, taking a trip to Columbia University’s campus to get lunch from the row of Chinese, Korean, and Thai food trucks in front of the campus’ main gates. In addition to the hot dog carts and halal food trucks which dot busy blocks all over the city, the food trucks near Columbia reflect the university’s changing demographics.
Over noodle dishes, pork buns, and dumplings, NYU Food Studies Professor Anneke Geyzen detailed the history of food trucks in New York City.

After lunch, the group headed to the other side of Central Park for a tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Spanning more than 2,000,000 square feet and home to more than two million works of art, it would be impossible to see everything in just one hour.
The guide organized a special tour for the NYC students, whose program this semester focuses on food, globalization and New York City. Spanning centuries and continents, the tour included a 14-foot-tall slit gong from Ambrym Island, a Kongolese power figure from the 19th century, Thomas Hart Benton’s four-wall mural depicting American life in the 1920s, Van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses, and King Henry VIII’s suit of armor.
“In high school I studied a lot of famous artists and visited the Met with my art teacher, so I always love going back there,” said Gabby Troya ’18. She enjoyed seeing the Degas paintings of the ballerinas and said since she started taking ballet, “I looked at them differently.”
The Met visit was also the highlight of the day for Rey Camacho ’18. “The tour guide took through paramount moments of history and across cultures, including African tribal art, European art through the ages, American paintings and historical artifacts,” Camacho said.
