Professor of History John Eldevik’s new translation and commentary of “The Passion of Archbishop Thiemo of Salzburg” was recently published by Manchester University Press. It is part of Lords and pastors: Lives of German bishops, 950-1250, a collection of translated biographies of medieval German bishops.
According to Eldevik, his contribution is “the first modern translation of the Passion (originally in Latin), and includes an introductory essay that situates the text and its composition in their historical context, along with explanatory notes.
“It recounts the career and martyrdom of the eponymous Bavarian archbishop, said to have been captured and killed during the Crusade of 1101,” he said, and is a “valuable source for the history of church politics in Germany in the 11th and 12th centuries, as well as for images of the Muslim enemy during the Crusades period.”
Lords and pastors: Lives of German bishops, 950-1250 was edited by Jonathan Lyon (University of Vienna, Austria), and Simon Maclean (University of St Andrews, Scotland).
