Kira Jumet

Associate Professor of Government Kira Jumet spent the 2025-26 academic year in Morocco with the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program. According to its website, the program offers opportunities for U.S. college and university faculty to “teach, conduct research, and carry out professional projects around the world.”

Doing Research as a Native: A Guide for Fieldwork in Illiberal and Repressive StatesJumet’s activities during the spring semester included presenting a talk about her edited volume, Doing Research as a Native: A Guide for Fieldwork in Illiberal and Repressive States (2025, Oxford University Press), in Rabat, Morocco’s capital.

She also led a workshop in Tangier about overcoming research challenges for Fulbright scholars based in Morocco and Spain. The workshop was part of the “Crossing the Straight Seminar,” an annual Fulbright seminar that brings Fulbright U.S. Scholars from two countries together while they are still participating in the Fulbright program.

Jumet said she found that “many of the participants were doing environmental science/policy work” and “most had not received the same fieldwork training (particularly related to the impact of political/legal and cultural/societal factors) that social scientists doing field research often have, even though these ES researchers are conducting surveys and interviews with local populations.”

In May, at the invitation of the vice president of the EMAA Business School, Jumet presented and conducted a workshop on academic publishing during the 7th International Conference on Multidisciplinary Research in Management and Economics.

She also presented her initial Fulbright project research findings as a member of the Economy & Governance panel at the Moroccan-American Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange’s Annual Research Symposium.
