Adrian Summers ’19 has been named a 2017 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education.
The Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes and supports community-committed students who have demonstrated an investment in finding solutions for challenges facing communities throughout the country. The fellowship is named in honor of Frank Newman, one of Campus Compact’s founders, and is supported by the KPMG Foundation and by the Newman's Own Foundation.
An Africana studies concentrator from the Bronx, N.Y., Summers is president of Hamilton’s Black and Latinx Student Union.

Among his community-based activities, he manages community outreach projects for underserved students in Utica, N.Y.
As ambassador to the Student Diversity Council and Student Assembly class representative, Summers spearheads initiatives to provide physical spaces for students to gather to address social issues. He is also a head mentor for the multicultural peer mentoring program. In addition to his service endeavors, Summers holds three campus positions: resident advisor, audiovisual technician and admission office overnight host coordinator.
Last summer at Hostos Community College in the Bronx, Summers worked as an ESL teacher for immigrant students. After graduation he hopes to work in education reform and access.
Through the Newman Fellowship, Campus Compact provides a variety of learning and networking opportunities, including a national conference of Newman Civic Fellows in partnership with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. The fellowship also provides fellows with pathways to exclusive scholarship and post-graduate opportunities.
