Encouraging one another is what Hamilton students do every day. There’s an unspoken yet unwavering commitment among them to lift each other up.

Spend just a few minutes with Norma Callejas ’26, and you’d be surprised to learn that a year ago this bubbly, enthusiastic sophomore was a timid, self-conscious first-year student who, before arriving at Hamilton, had never set foot outside her home state of Texas.

Assistant Professor of Theatre Tobin Ost, who specializes in scenic design, does not believe in “art with a capital A,” especially when it applies to design. Throughout his career, Ost has broadened his experiences and knowledge of the world around him while encouraging students to do the same. And some of his students are people who never intended to set foot into the world of theatre.

As long as she has been a student at Hamilton, Mary Hurner ’24 has been passionate about building community both on and off the Hill, and this summer was no exception. Hurner was recently recognized as an inaugural awardee of the Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service, also known as the Voyager Scholarship. The scholarship granted her a $10,000 stipend and free Airbnb housing to pursue a self-designed work-travel experience.

Walk through the List Building on a Wednesday night, and you might hear a group of students discussing telephone poles, bollards, road signs, and the position of the sun in the sky. These students are not working on homework for an urban planning class. They are studying up on strategies for the game Geoguessr.

Even during the summer, Hamilton students kept busy pursuing projects that reflect their talents and interests. Some conducted research off-campus, or studied abroad; others focused on preparing for Senior Fellowships or internships off-campus. Check out what some of our students did over the summer.

Between resume building, networking, and internships, most economics students are busy enough just trying to break into the industry. But some are also trying to change it—even while helping themselves and their peers find their footing in the fast-paced finance world.

Greeted by signs and cheers from orientation leaders lining College Hill Road, 463 new Hamilton students and their families arrived on Aug. 15 for move-in and orientation.
