(Elizabeth) Libby Chamberlin ’14 had a memorable birthday as she turned 22 on 12/12/12. At precisely 12:12 p.m. that day she was in Professor John O’Neal’s French class when the a capella group the Hamiltones stopped in to serenade her.  The sing was organized by O’Neal and Chamberlin’s friend Louisa Savage ’13.

In what has become an annual tradition, Hamilton Association for Volunteering Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) and Community Opportunity and Outreach Project (COOP) collected food, gifts and other items to make the holidays a bit happier for some local families in need.

Alan Cafruny, Henry Bristol Professor of International Affairs, and Ted Lehmann, assistant professor of government, contributed to the recently published Exploring the Global Financial Crisis, volume 18. It is part of the series Advances in International Political Economy, edited by Cafruny and Herman Schwartz (University of Virginia) under the sponsorship of the International Studies Association (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 2013).

Dean of Faculty Patrick Reynolds visited Professor Gordon Jones’ “Physics 190: The Mechanical Universe” class last week to help illustrate some laws of physics.  Lying on a bed of nails, Reynolds demonstrated the difference between force and pressure. In comparing a bed with a single nail to one with hundreds of nails in both cases the force (Reynolds’ weight) is the same, but the pressure is different.  On a bed of hundreds of nails the force is spread over many nails in the same way that pressure depends on the area over which a force is spread.

Seven students have been selected to receive the Class of 1979 Student Travel Award. The award, established by the alumni of Hamilton's Class of 1979, offers financial assistance to outstanding students who wish to pursue extensive research projects in different parts of the world.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Calin Trenkov-Wermuth ’00 took members of his United Nations and Global Security class on a field trip to United Nations headquarters in New York City on Nov. 28.

The Hamilton College Choir, directed by Professor G. Roberts Kolb, will lead a Candlelight Christmas Vesper Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m., in the College Chapel. The service is free and open to the public.

Jon Bon Jovi and The Kings of Suburbia played to a sold-out group of Hamilton alumni, parents and friends at New York’s Best Buy Theater on Dec. 5 in a benefit concert for scholarships and the arts at Hamilton. The DownBeat Keys, a Brooklyn-based hip-hop band featuring five Hamilton College alumni, opened for Bon Jovi.

Ten Hamilton students have received grants from the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The 2012 recipients are James Anesta  ’14, Emily Archer  ’13, Rachel Bristol ’13 , Matthew Combs ’13, Danielle Lashley ’13, Sara Meissner  ’13, Cindy Reyes ’13, Nicolas Keller Sarmiento ’13, Taylor Coe ’13 and Evan Van Tassell ’13.

Frank Anechiarico ‘71, the Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law, gave a lecture on Nov. 29 at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. His lecture on “The Law and Politics of Quarantine in the United States” was at the invitation of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
