One year after the inaugural Run for The Fallen, a ceremonial run/walk will take place on the Hamilton College campus on Sunday, Aug. 23, at 9 a.m. It will begin at the Michael J. Cleary ’03 Tree, adjacent to the Campus Road side of the Siuda House (Office of Admission and Financial Aid). Please join members of the community for this special remembrance.

Brent Rodriguez Plate, visiting associate professor of religious studies, will discuss Sunday's (3/15/09) episode of HBO's "Big Love" in a KUER (Salt Lake City)/ Radio West interview with Doug Fabrizio on Monday, March 16, at 1 p.m. EST. The show stars Bill Paxton as modern polygamist Bill Henrickson tackling problems outside his three-house suburban home. "Big Love" has been nominated for Emmy and Golden Globe awards. Eight Hamilton College faculty members were approved for tenure by the College's Board of Trustees during their recent meeting. The Board granted tenure to Heather Buchman (music), Jennifer Irons (sociology), Masaaki Kamiya (East Asian languages and literatures), Katherine Kuharic (art), Mike McCormick (biology), Tara McKee (psychology), Kyoko Omori (East Asian languages and literatures) and Sharon Werning Rivera (government).

Professor of Chinese De Bao Xu was invited to give two plenary talks at the annual Conference of Chinese Education last summer in China. He presented "The Crucialty of Learning Classical Chinese" at the Hainan session at Hainan Normal University, and "The First Step to Raise One's Reading and Writing Ability" at the conference's Wuhan Session at Hu Bei University.

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack '72 was interviewed on NPR's Morning Edition on March 10 concerning proposed changes to farming. The former Iowa governor said farmers should see the Obama administration's new energy initiatives as opportunities to make new money, at a time when traditional farming policies run in the face of a soaring deficit. "Agriculture has to be open to change," Vilsack said. "…Climate change and energy provide that opportunity. "

Piruz Partow, musician and director of the Brooklyn School of Music, will perform at Hamilton on Wednesday, March 11, at 7 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn. Partow plays the tar, a traditional Persian string instrument. The performance is free and open to the public.

About 60 Hamilton students and staff members participated in the annual America's Greatest Heart Run and Walk on Saturday, March 7, at Utica College. These volunteers joined a group of some 8,500 people in walking and running between three and five miles. The annual event raises money and awareness for the American Heart Association and its fight against heart disease and stroke. Hamilton has fielded a team for many years. Hamilton team captains were Colleen Pellman, John O'Neal and Ernest Williams.

Anna Oldfield, Asian Studies Postdoctoral Fellow and visiting assistant professor of comparative literature, presented at the 11th annual Women's History Conference "Gender and Power in the Muslim World" at Sarah Lawrence College on March 6-7.

Senior classics major Casey Green's senior seminar paper has been selected for the Eta Sigma Phi panel at the 2010 APA meeting in California. Eta Sigma Phi is the national classics honor society and the APA is the American Philological Association, the national professional organization for classicists. In addition, senior Madeline Ware's paper received honorable mention for the Eta Sigma Phi convention later this month in Memphis. Hamilton was the only school to have two papers recognized.

The Alternative Spring Break (ASB) Auction on March 5 drew Hamilton students and community members to the annual event designed to raise money to help fund the nine volunteer trips that begin next Friday. This year 100 Hamilton students will participate in ASB, the largest number of volunteers ever.
