  • Performances of the Theatre Department’s production of Naomi Wallace’s Slaughter City will continue from Thursday, Nov. 11, through Saturday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m., in Minor Theater. The play is open to the public, and tickets cost $5 for adults, and $3 for senior citizens and students.

  • The Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing presented three works by Samuel Pellman,  the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of Music, on Oct. 27 as part of the Musicacoustica 2010 Festival. The concert included M45, NGC 1999, and NGC 6357 -- three works from the Selected Nebulae series of works composed for virtual instruments with video by Miranda Raimondi '08.

  • Anthony Grafton, Henry Putnam University Professor of History at Princeton University, will present the Doris M. and Ralph E. Hansmann Lecture on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 4:10 p.m., in the Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. The lecture, titled “The Fall and Rise of Sacred History in Early Modern Europe” is free and open to the public.  

  • Breyten Breytenbach, a native of South Africa and a distinguished writer and painter, will give a reading on Thursday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m., in the Red Pit, Kirner-Johnson Building. The event is free and open to the public.  

  • Sean Safford, visiting professor of management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, will give a lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn. The lecture, based on his book, is titled “Why the Garden Club Couldn't Save Youngstown: Lessons for Regional Resilience,” and is part of the 2010-11 Levitt Center series on “Sustainability.” It is free and open to the public.

  • Mountaineering writer Bernadette McDonald will speak on the topic “Writing a Life: Himalayan Heroes,”  on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Red Pit, Kirner-Johnson Building. The event is free and open to the public.  A book sale and signing will follow McDonald’s presentation.

  • The General Electric (GE) board of directors has named Hamilton alumnus and trustee John G. Rice ’78 as head of global operations. Rice, a GE vice chairman since 2005, will be in charge of GE’s growth outside the United States. The appointment is effective Jan. 1, 2011, and Rice will relocate to Hong Kong, according to a GE press release.

  • Hamilton is proud to recognize its 24 student volunteer members of Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) as the week of Nov. 7 marks National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Week.

  • The Hamilton College Department of Music presents a free faculty recital by Heather Buchman, trombone, on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall. Buchman will be accompanied by Sar-Shalom Strong, piano, and Ilze Brink-Button, horn, in the program of solo works and transcriptions for trombone by Bach, Scarlatti, Mahler and others.

  • The Hamilton College Theatre Department will present Naomi Wallace’s Slaughter City in eight performances in Minor Theater.  Directed by Professor of Theatre Carole Bellini-Sharp, shows will be staged Thursday, Nov. 4 - Saturday, Nov. 6, and Wednesday, Nov. 10 - Saturday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m. There will be a matinee performance on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m. The play is open to the public, and tickets cost $5 for adults, and $3 for senior citizens and students.
