In a note to the Hamilton community on Saturday, Oct. 18, Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the death Friday of senior Katharine Eckman, following a brief battle with cancer. She described Kat's death as "a terrible loss for her family, our college and her many friends."

Members of the Social Justice Initiative, a Hamilton College student organization formed in 2007, presented copies of a petition with approximately 370 signatures to members of the college's Board of Trustees as they arrived for their quarterly meeting on campus Saturday, Oct. 4. The key point was the students' proposal of a cultural education center.

Hamilton College students and employees have a new tool to reduce their carbon footprint.  The College has teamed with Lucid Design Group of Oakland, Calif., to develop an interactive Web site that displays energy usage for buildings in real-time. The system also stores data so that, over time, energy-use comparisons can be made to previous days, months and years. 

Moody's Investor Service has assigned Hamilton College an initial rating of Aa2 and said the college's financial outlook is stable.  According to Moody's, "obligations rated Aa are judged to be of high quality and are subject to very low credit risk." The addition of the numerical modifier "2" in the initial rating indicates a mid-range ranking in the Aa category. 

Village of Clinton Mayor Gill Goering and Town of Kirkland Supervisor Bob Meelan issued a joint proclamation celebrating the women's lacrosse team's national championship. The proclamation was read at the Town Board meeting on Wednesday, May 21, and printed in the following week's Clinton Courier.

Hamilton's Bicentennial Class, so named because the members of the class of 2012 will graduate in the same year the College celebrates its 200th anniversary, is setting records well before students matriculate in the fall. 

Hamilton College has responded to a Senate Finance Committee request for information about endowment spending and financial aid policies. Hamilton was one of 136 U.S. colleges and universities, each with endowments of at least $500 million, that received the request from Senators Max Baucus and Charles Grassley.

The Hamilton College Town-Gown Fund Committee has awarded nine grants totaling $38,425 to local educational, public safety and other community organizations in the Town of Kirkland.

Hamilton College is mourning the death of former president Harry C. Payne, who died unexpectedly on Monday in Atlanta. In announcing the death to the campus community, President Joan Hinde Stewart said, "On behalf of Hamilton, I extend our deepest sympathy to Hank's wife Deborah and the Payne family."

The women's soccer team, two cross country runners and the men's rugby team all advanced in national competition.
