  • The Library Journal, a major publication for libraries across the country, recently gave Continental Divide – A History of American Mountaineering by Maurice Isserman, the Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History, a starred review.

  • In her seventh interview on American Public Media’s Marketplace program in a year, Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, discussed the recent surge in consumer spending in April. The increase was the largest in more than six years, due in large part to hefty spending on durable goods. Owen said that the “glass half full interpretation” would be that people are feeling more confident and are willing to make big purchases.

  • A fund established by 1964 Hamilton graduate Daniel W. Dietrich II, who died last year, has provided the college with a $6 million gift to establish The Daniel W. Dietrich ’64 Fund for Innovation in the Arts and The Daniel W. Dietrich ’64 Arts Museum Programming  Fund. These two funds will significantly expand the College’s already robust arts programming for its faculty, students and community.

If the answer is yes, 89 percent of the time that person will have a higher opinion of Trump than Clinton.” So began an analysis of results from the 2016 American National Election Study (ANES) pilot survey by James S. Sherman Professor of Government Philip Klinkner published by Vox on June 2.

  • With a well-known commencement speaker who holds controversial views, Hamilton may have anticipated a bit more national media attention to the event than in past years. What was not expected was additional focus on the dean of faculty.

  • A May 17 American Public Media Marketplace broadcast titled “Why did inflation increase in April?” featured an interview with Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics. Responding to a U.S. Department of Labor report that the consumer price index or CPI rose in April, Owen pointed out that energy prices are increasing, although they still were not as high as they were a year ago.

  • Participants of the Spring 2016 New York City (NYC) program had opportunity to attend a performance of La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera on April 29. For many, it was the first time to experience a live operatic production. La Bohème is a timeless love story set in Paris in the 1830s.

  • As one of the few surveys of Russian elites - perhaps the only publicly available survey -  conducted since Putin returned to the presidency in 2012, the newly released Hamilton College Levitt Poll, titled The Russian Elite 2016, represents a unique resource. Survey data on whether Russian elites support the more muscular foreign policy that has been pursued during Vladimir Putin’s third presidential term (2012-present) have been largely unavailable–until now. 

  • “Like a hike into rough terrain, the book is full of surprises … And it is packed with fascinating details,”  proclaimed a Wall Street Journal reviewer in describing Professor of History Maurice Isserman’s newest book. According to publisher W.W. Norton & Company, Continental Divide – A History of American Mountaineering “tells the history of American mountaineering through four centuries of landmark climbs and first ascents.”
