  • An opinion piece written by James L. Ferguson Professor of History Maurice Isserman titled "The higher summit in Sir Edmund Hillary's life" appears in the Monday, Jan. 14, issue of The Christian Science Monitor. Isserman's piece focuses on Hillary's enormous philanthropic contributions to Nepal after his successful climb to the summit of Mount Everest.

  • Hamilton alumnus David Grubin '65, a producer, writer and cinematographer who received an honorary degree from Hamilton in 2003, has written and directed a three-part documentary, The Jewish Americans, which is airing this month on public television stations nationwide. The first segment will air in Central New York on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 10 p.m. on WCNY.

  • Throughout the fall semester, Hamilton played host to a broad range of approximately 70 speakers, from a pair of political consultants representing both major parties to a Himalayan mountaineer, on a wide variety of topics, from the history of U.S.-Cuban diplomacy to genetic coding. A review of a list of some of these visitors highlights the diversity of disciplines, views and interests represented on campus as well as the opportunities afforded our students and our community.

  • Three exhibits opening on Monday, Jan. 14, at Hamilton's Emerson Gallery explore key moments in African-American history through photography and political satire. Two photography exhibits are comprised of images of Underground Railroad sites and Civil War venues at which black soldiers fought. The third exhibit explores the reality of life for many African-Americans in post-Civil War America as seen through images of political cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840-1902).

  • Local media coverage is as important to Hamilton as is national attention. Hamilton students and faculty contribute their time and expertise to the local community in many ways. College-sponsored programs also make news in Central New York. Alerting the community to Hamilton's many public lectures and events contributes to stronger community ties. Here are some of those stories from 2007.

  • Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy Alan Kim has published an article titled "Recollecting the Soul: Paul Natorp's Construction of a Platonic 'Psychology'" in the Dec. 2008 issue of the Internationale Zeitschrift für Philosophie. Natorp was a philosopher of the Marburg School of Neo-Kantianism that dominated the German philosophical scene at the turn of the last century, but which has only recently enjoyed a revival of interest.

  • News organizations speak with Hamilton faculty members about important national and world events. Faculty members also write opinion pieces, letters and comments that either the media relations office or the faculty member places in national newspapers and publication. Here are some of our favorites.

  • Assistant Professor of Anthropology Haeng-ja Chung presented a paper, "Erotic Capital of Korean Nightclub Hostesses in Japan: Performative, Emotional, & Affective Labor," at the Symposium: Imperial Japan and Colonial Sensibility: Affect, Object, Embodiment at UCLA on Dec. 7.

  • Hamilton's Media Relations Office helps make national media outlets aware of significant news about the College. Some of our favorite stories from 2007 appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times,  The Washington Post, Trusteeship Magazine, InsideHigherEd.com and USA Today among others.

  • A generous supporter of many nonprofit organizations in the Mohawk Valley and beyond, alumnus Eugene Romano '49 has made a major gift to Hamilton. The $2.5 million donation is targeted for the construction of a new 150-seat theatre that will serve both Hamilton and the surrounding communities. Over the many years that he has supported the College, this is Romano's largest gift.
