Event Description

Image as Preface: Interpreting Two Architectural Paintings from an Early Islamic Qur’an

A Talk by Candidate for VAP of Art History, Dr. Theodore Van Loan of Washington and Lee University

Why preface the text of the Qur’an with images of architectural space? This talk will consider this question by investigating two folios of a large-scale early period Qur’anic manuscript. It will propose several ways in which these pictures constitute a visual preface to the sacred text.
