More than a Major (or Minor): Latinx Studies as Institutional Infrastructure

What happens when students find a place inside the university where they feel seen, challenged, and equipped to give back to their communities? This talk draws on interviews with Latino Studies majors and faculty at universities across the country, alongside a national study of over 200 Hispanic-Serving Institutions, to argue that Latinx Studies operates as institutional infrastructure not just for majors, but for the broader campus. Students describe these programs as home, as places of intellectual transformation, and for some, as the reason they persisted. The evidence, both statistical and personal, makes a clear case: Latino Studies is foundational to the work universities claim to do.
