| 1:30-3 p.m. TOM WILLIAMS ’11 ON ROBOTICS AND SOCIAL JUSTICE Kirner-Johnson 202 For most of us, it’s not intuitive to think there’s a connection between robots and social justice. Drawing on computer science, history, politics, the law, feminist and Black studies, literary theories, psychology, and more, his book connects the issues around robot construction with abolitionist movements. In this presentation, Tom will share insights from his research and ask us to question not only what we know about how these machines are made but also how we can envision a more socially just future of robotics. 3-4 p.m.![]() THE FUTURE OF CITIES, WITH BILL PURCELL ’76 Kirner-Johnson 203 Bill Purcell ’76, adjunct professor of public policy at Vanderbilt and former mayor of Nashville, will lead a discussion of the many lives of cities. After half a century of decline, American cities are taking center stage in policy and political life again. We will discuss why former Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O’Neill’s take — "all politics is local" — is truer today than ever. Bill will discuss the challenges that are facing our metropolitan areas and the citizens who live in them, work in them, and lead them. In addition, he will delve into the history and importance of urban planning, with special attention to the protection and enhancement of both the built environment and the green environment. Are the policies, especially ecological ones, successful? What lessons have we learned, and what do we need to do now to ensure cities will thrive and evolve in decades to come? This event is sponsored by the Class of 1976 in celebration of its 50th reunion and is open to all. |
