Jinnie Garrett
William R. Kenan Professor of Biology Emerita (retired)
Jinnie Garrett retired in June 2015 after 29 years on the faculty. She completed her undergraduate degree at North East Surrey College of Technology in England, a master’s degree at Trent University in Canada and a doctorate at Texas A&M University. Professor Garrett is particularly interested in ethical and social issues associated with genetic research, and her areas of expertise include molecular genetics of yeast and microbial metagenomics. She has published articles in the Journal of Bacteriology, the Journal of Cell Biology and Genetics, and has been awarded grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and several private foundations for both her laboratory research and in support of institutional initiatives. She is now dean of natural sciences and mathematics at Ferrum College in Virginia.
