Ann Silversmith
Litchfield Professor of Astronomy Emerita (retired)
Ann Silversmith received her bachelor’s degree from Oberlin College, her master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and her doctorate from Australian National University. After completing postdoctoral work at the IBM Almaden Research Center, she joined the faculty in 1989 and introduced laser spectroscopy to the Physics Department. Professor Silversmith specializes in developing new laser materials that would be useful in the solid-state laser industry. She is investigating the spectro-scopy of rare earth doped sol-gel glasses. Her research has been funded by the Research Corporation and the National Science Foundation.
