A Community Conversation on Inclusive Language

RSVP for Chipotle lunch by 4/7

Hey guys! Ooops, can we say that? Or should we say “people” or “folks” to be more inclusive? Inclusive language aims to foster belonging by respecting diverse identities. However, the practice of using or enforcing inclusive language can raise eyebrows – or hackles. Some people argue that these guidelines may feel overly prescriptive, hinder open dialogue, or create social barriers for people from different cultures or economic classes. Others see inclusive language as an easy way to be welcoming and supportive of  marginalized groups. What do you think? Does the insistence on correct language alienate or “other” people and prevent them from engaging? Do changes to language create confusion or push people to change habits that aren’t really harmful?  Or is“inclusive” or politically correct language an important part of creating a more welcoming and respectful atmosphere for everyone?

Come discuss with other members of the Hamilton community on Thursday, April 9th in the Levitt Conference Room from 12-12:50pm.  Lunch from Chipotle included!

This is a Crossroads Event. Community Conversations are made possible by The Alan McCullough, Jr. Fund for Applied Philosophy.
