Innovation is a catalyst for economic growth. U.S. support for innovation and entrepreneurs has long been the foundation for global leadership. Yet the U.S. is at a crossroads as global competitors vie for leadership in artificial intelligence and other key technologies. This presentation discusses how U.S. policy has helped secure U.S. leadership over the past two centuries and how it may do so in the future. It also is a call to arms for budding innovators and entrepreneurs.
Paul Asel co-founded NGP Capital and led a global venture firm for two decades with $1.7 billion assets under management and offices in Europe, Asia and the United States. NGP Capital was named 2016 Fund of the Year by Global Corporate Venturing and Paul’s investment in Ganji won Deal of the Year. Paul was an early investor and Board Director in 31 startups, including eight unicorns, with a combined enterprise value exceeding $20 billion. Recognized annually on the GCV Power List, Paul Chaired the GCV Board and served on the Advisory Committee of the National Venture Capital Association.
Paul co-founded three successful financial firms in addition to NGP Capital, which together sold for over $800 million. Paul began his career on Wall Street with Merrill Lynch and was Principle leading investments in Asia at the International Finance Corporation. He received an MBA from Stanford University and a BA from Dartmouth College. Paul co-authored Upward Bound: Lessons of How Nine Leaders Achieved their Summits and contributed to De Gruyter Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance. He has 100+ articles published in top business journals and his blog on Medium at @PaulAsel is widely followed. He is Adjunct Professor at the George Mason Schar School of Policy and Government where he is also pursuing a doctorate in public policy.
