Event Description

Throughout history and even today, African American Vernacular English, also known as Black American English, has been undervalued, often labeled as 'incorrect', 'inferior' and 'improper' compared to other English dialects. Despite this, words from AAVE such as 'period', 'sis', and 'snatched' have been stolen, repackaged, and often misused as 'Internet Slang' by the very people who refuse to acknowledge the validity of the language.

Join BLSU, the Multilingual Specialist and the Language Center to celebrate Black History Month and International Mother Language Day as we explore what it means to define a language and the influence that AAVE has on modern English.
