Seventy-five second graders came from Waterville Elementary on December 9 to explore the Wellin, following an earlier in-school presentation about the museum, its facilities, and collection of Greek vases. The students were learning about Greek history from their teacher, and the lessons designed by our educational staff supplemented their module. For some of the students, this was their first time in a museum. They were exited to see the artifacts, they had previously only seen in pictures, up close and in-person. Hamilton College student docents led the second graders through Visual Thinking Strategy (VTS) exercises in three different locations in the museum. The students also spent time looking at contemporary art in the Alyson Shotz: Force of Nature exhibition and learning about an artist’s practice. The trip to the museum also included sketching, reading, and writing.
